Phone screen is cracked or broken
A cracked screen is very common, and there are simple ways to stay safe and protect your stuff until it's fixed.
Be careful: Broken glass can cut. If the battery looks swollen, the phone is hot, or the screen is lifting up, stop using it and don't charge it.
What to do
Step 1: Check whether the screen still works and responds to touch.
Step 2: Cover the cracks with a clear screen protector or clear packing tape so you don't cut your fingers.
Step 3: Back up your phone now, in case the screen gets worse. See our answer on backing up your whole phone.
Step 4: Keep the phone away from water, because a cracked screen lets water in.
Step 5: Check whether you have a warranty, insurance, AppleCare, Samsung Care+ or carrier phone cover, which can make the repair cheaper.
Step 6: Get a repair quote from the maker's store, an authorized repair shop or a trusted local repair shop.
Still stuck? If the screen is black or won't respond and you need your photos, take it to a repair shop soon and ask them to save your data first.
