Computer is running very slow

A slow computer is one of the most common problems, and a few simple tidy-ups usually make a real difference.

What to do

  1. Step 1: Restart the computer: click Start, then the Power button, then Restart. This alone often helps a lot.

  2. Step 2: Close programs and browser tabs you aren't using.

  3. Step 3: Open Settings, choose Windows Update, and install any updates. Restart if asked.

  4. Step 4: Check free space: open Settings, then System, then Storage. If it's nearly full, delete or move files you don't need and empty the Recycle Bin.

  5. Step 5: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, click Startup apps (the Startup tab on Windows 10), and Disable programs you don't need at startup.

  6. Step 6: Run a virus scan: open Windows Security from the Start menu, choose Virus & threat protection, then Quick scan.

  7. Step 7: If it's a laptop, plug it in, as some laptops slow down on battery.

Still stuck? If it's still slow, it may be getting old or need more memory or a faster drive, so ask a trusted repair shop for advice before buying anything.
